Marriage Equality Senate Inquiry

The Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee has recommended in its report of Nov 26 that same-sex marriages should not be allowed in Australia. The committee investigated a Bill introduced by the Greens to allow same-sex marriages. The Committee received 81 submissions from organisation, 36 opposed, 44 in favour. In addition, 15,979 submissions/letters were receiving from individuals opposed to the Bill and 5,574 from individuals supporting the bill.

However, Saltshakers says that the committee DID recommend that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issue certificates of non-impediment to same-sex couples wanting to “marry” overseas. This certificate assists same-sex couples in establishing their ability to marry. It also recommended that the government review the recognition of homosexual relationships with the aim of developing a nationally consistent framework.

R18+ Video Games

The Rudd Govt is considering extending the R18+ classification to computer games. Currently the highest classification is MA15+. Saltshakers says it is not the first time this has been considered and is an attempt to allow graphic games. The ACL says that “The introduction of such games into Australia would inevitably lead to some children playing and being influenced by these games – to the detriment of both their development and the wider society.”
