Mixed Messages

On Feb 14 Perth hosted the Good Vibrations Festival. The festival has also been held in Sydney and will be held in the Gold Coast and Melbourne this weekend. Sponsoring the event was alcohol companies Jagermeister, Smirnoff and Tiger Beer. Addiction campaigners have condemned the sponsorship of youth events such as the Big Day Out by alcohol companies. The Australian Drug Foundation, Saltshakers and Melbourne addiction specialist Jon Currie believe the new trend of alcohol company sponsorship of youth events undermined the work done to educate people about the dangers of alcohol. It also goes against the advertising code which says it is wrong to promote alcohol to people under the legal drinking age.

Action: Saltshakers is calling on the government to ban the sponsorship of such events for young people by alcohol companies. They ask that you let the premier of your State and PM Rudd know that you share these concerns. Contact PM Rudd: http://www.pm.gov.au/PM_Connect/Email_your_PM

Classification Board

The National Classification Board is currently seeking new board members, senior classifiers and a deputy director. The Board classifies every film and computer game in Australia before it is legally available by giving it a rating such as G, PG, M etc. The Australian Sex Party is encouraging members of the porn industry to apply. No formal qualifications are required to become a member of the Classification Board. According to the application form, members reflect the diversity of opinion and values in the community. A broad life experience and experience with children will be highly regarded. Applications need to be in by Mar 1, 2010.

Meanwhile the ACL reports that there was a fascinating exchange between Senator Guy Barnett and Donald McDonald, the Director of the Classification Board, at Senate Estimates in early Feb. According to McDonald the board had issued call-in notices for 36 porn magazines and 440 adult films between July-Dec 2009 because they breached classification laws. Not one of the publishers responded to the Boards notice. As a result unclassified and illegal films and magazines remain available to purchase. The ACL is seeking a reform of the Classification Board and its role in the up-coming federal election.
