Mixed Messages

On Feb 14 Perth hosted the Good Vibrations Festival. The festival has also been held in Sydney and will be held in the Gold Coast and Melbourne this weekend. Sponsoring the event was alcohol companies Jagermeister, Smirnoff and Tiger Beer. Addiction campaigners have condemned the sponsorship of youth events such as the Big Day Out by alcohol companies. The Australian Drug Foundation, Saltshakers and Melbourne addiction specialist Jon Currie believe the new trend of alcohol company sponsorship of youth events undermined the work done to educate people about the dangers of alcohol. It also goes against the advertising code which says it is wrong to promote alcohol to people under the legal drinking age.
