Fostering Complicated

The Department of Child Protection, which has been running a massive advertising campaign seeking foster parents for the 3238 children in state care, has drawn criticism from Southern River MLA Peter Abetz. Mr Abetz was critical of a decision by the Department not to allow Christian couple John and Tricia Wieske, from Cardup, to have foster children because they smacked their own children. He said it was political correctness gone mad. The West Australian has covered the issue over the past week since the Wieske family spoke of smacking their children as a part of bringing them up.

Action: The Wieske family is asking people to write a letter to the Editor of the West Australian which calls for the Dept of Child Protection to change the criteria for foster parents. They also ask that people call talkback shows. They also encourage people to talk about it among their church and non-church friends.

Action: The ACL is asking people to write a letter to Child Protection Minister Robyn McSweeney regarding the anti-smacking policy from the Dept. The ACL asks that you be sympathetic to their rationale that they want to be sensitive to children who have been traumatised by violence.. There are many willing foster carers who are being barred from caring because of this policy.

Details: Hon. Robyn McSweeney

    Child Porn

The Australian Christian Lobby reports that a politically correct attempt to drop the word ‘pornography’ from the phrase ‘child pornography in WA legislation has been scuttled.

The ACL e-news (Mar 11) states: “The Child Exploitation Material and Classification Legislation Amendment Bill 2009, which is currently before the Legislative Council, seeks to amend the Criminal Code in relation to child pornography offences, but it initially also attempted to strike out of the law the term ‘child pornography’ in favour of ‘child exploitation material’. ACL argues that this deceptively removes from the law the appropriate stigma attached to the word ‘pornography’.

Liberal MLC Nick Goiran spoke in parliament against the rewording, arguing that the parliament should not conspire with the pornography industry to deceptively re-brand the words as has already been done by calling pornography adult entertainment or non-violent erotica.

On March 4, 2010, MLC Nick Gorian presented 101 petitions against any move by the WA Govt to legalise or normalise prostitution. They called for the advertising of illegal prostitution businesses to be made illegal. The West Australian newspaper currently allows advertising of brothels and prostitution.
