Child Exploitation

Campaigning by Liberal MLC Nick Goiran led to two amendments being passed to a child exploitation bill that was reviewed by the Legislative Council of the WA Parliament. On March 25, 2010 the council passed the bill, which is now known as the Child Pornography and Exploitation Material and Classification Legislation Amendment Bill 2009. Goiran managed to seek an amendment that re introduced the term ‘pornography” in the title of the bill as well as in the definitions of the Criminal Code in order to better reflect what the purpose of the legislation is. However an effort to increase the age definition of a child from 16 to 18 years of age and the removal of the “artistic” defence for child pornography, abuse, and exploitation was rejected by the council. The bill now goes to the lower house for debate.
