EMILY’s List

Emily’s List provides support to ‘progressive’ women candidates and members of Australian parliaments who, among other things, support abortion. At this election it is supporting at least 20 Labor candidates.

Among those on Emily’s List are PM Julia Gillard, Penny Wong, Tanya Plibersek as well as 5 in WA. Those from WA are Alannah MacTiernan for the seat of Canning; Sharryn Jackson, Hasluck; Melissa Parke, Fremantle; Louise Durack, Stirling and Jackie Jarvis candidate for the South West seat of Forrest.

GALE Busy

The Gay and Lesbian Equality WA (GALE) is asking people on their website to write 50 letters to the Editor in 5 days, as part of this week’s action promoting homosexuality. The GALE homepages include a link to a letter writing guide for people to use.

School Funding

Cathnews reports July 17, 2010 that Catholic educators have invited all MPs to visit their schools, in a bid to secure funding after the upcoming election. The Director of Catholic Education in the Archdiocese of Melbourne, Stephen Elder, is quoted as saying that he is worried his schools will be short-changed by Labor’s review of the existing funding model.

Get Up Busy

Action group, Get Up is working actively to promote its agenda in the election campaign supported by a significant advertising blitz. On the night of July 22, 2010 across Australia Get up members got together in 202 houses, including 26 homes in WA and 4 in Tasmania. Its campaign centres on climate change, mental health, refugees and forestry. In one day last week 6000 GetUp members contacted their local politician urging action on reducing carbon pollution.

Green Muslims

The Muslim newspaper Crescent Times (www.crescenttimes.com.au) has an article by Jamal Daoud which expressed concern with the growing number of Muslims voting for the Greens. The article warns that voting for the Greens is actually voting against Muslim’s own interests. Among the concerns states is that the Greens are the most vocal party in advocating anti-family values and polices.
