Tasmania Homosexual Marriage

On Sept 29, 2010 without exception, all the Tasmanian Upper House members voted in favour of recognising same sex marriage from interstate and overseas. It is the first Australian state to recognise overseas same-sex marriages. In early September only three members of the lower house, Michael Ferguson, Rene Hidding and Jacquie Petrusma voted against the Bill. Homosexual campaigner Rodney Croome said the Australian Prime Minister Gillard should now follow Tasmania’s example. In 2003 Tasmania was the first State to establish a civil partnership scheme. In 2009 the Tasmanian Labor Party was the first in Australia to support same-sex marriage.
