Tassie Surrogacy Laws Passed

The Australian Prayer Network Oct newsletter states that the upperhouse of the Tasmanian Parliament has passed surrogacy laws allowing singles, hetro and homosexual couples to have access to altruistic surrogacy. Australian Christian Lobby Tasmanian director Mark Brown said the bill denies a child’s fundemental right to at least begin life with a mother and father.

Gillard Pledges Abortion Support

The Australian Prayer Network Oct 2012 newsletter reports that Australian PM Gillard told a dinner held by the Australian Medical Association that vigilance was required to “protect the progress we’ve made, particularly in women’s health. Women must have the right to choose,” she said. In her “misogyny” speech in Parliament on 8 Oct Gillard blasted Abbott for his abortion views.

Notable Christians: Abraham Kuyper

Bill Muehlenberg from CultureWatch writes that Kuyper, one of the great Christian thinkers and doers of the last century, is well worth being aware of. He quotes Kuyper as commenting on Ps 24:1 (The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it): “In the total expanse of human life there is not a single square inch of which Christ, who alone is sovereign, does not declare, ‘That is mine!’.”

Get Up targets Woolies

Lobby group Get Up is asking people to print off a letter they have written which expressed disappointment that Woolworths is the largest poker machine owner in Australia. Get Up is askiing people to deliver to the manager of their local Woolworths store. The campaign comes ahead of a extraordinary general meeting on November 22 which Woolworth shareholders linked to Get Up called which will consider Woolworth’s involvement in Gambling. Through its subsidiary AHL, Woolworths operates 12650 poker machines which generated an estimated $1.2b in net gambling revenue. State Homosexual Marriage Laws Unconstitutional

Murdoch University senior lecturer in constitutional law and associate dean (research) Augusto Zimmermann reports in News Weekly (Oct 13 2012) that the push by Labor and the Greens to introduce same sex “marriage” laws in State Parliament is unconstitutional. He writes that any such legislation would be subject to disallowance by the High Court as the Australian Constitution gives the Commonwealth parliament authority to makes laws with respect to marriage. Blackout 2012

Blackout 2012, organised by OpenDoors, is to be held from 9pm Fri 2 Nov to 9pm Sun 4 Nov 2012. It is an opportunity for people to turn off their phone, facebook, twitter, computer games or email and join the BlackOut. Blackout is designed to raise awareness of the estimated 400 million Christians that are currently facing persecution. Opendoors says churches or schools can organise a 48 hour lock-down and indivuduals can also get involved. People can seek sponsorship to raise money for the persecuted.
