“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

- Matt 5:13,14

Gleanings serves to help equip the Australian Christian with the knowledge and tools necessary to live as a light and salt in the Australian social and political spheres. The quote above from Matthew 5 shows that, as Christians, we are called to be a shining light and a seasoning salt in this world. Often, it is too easy to stand by and let the events of the world roll past us.

Gleanings serves as a collection of news items, events and submissions that we think will be of interest to Australian Christians. Specifically, we are members of the Free Reformed Churches of Australia, and so the items we post will be most relevant to fellow members, but certainly not irrelevant to other Christians.

Often, we will also include a way for you to take action on a particular item. This could include signing a petition, writing to someone or helping out in some other way.

Using the Site

We’ve done our best to make the Gleanings site easy to use. However, if you run stuck somewhere, here’s a quick guide.

The Front Page

On the front page you’ll notice a few sections. The biggest is the listing of our latest postings, in full, below the “Browse by Category” and “What’s On” areas. This just contains the latest postings, in the order they were posted (newest first). If you just want to find out what’s been happening over the last few weeks, this is the best place to start. Just scroll down to read successively older posts, and use the navigation links at the bottom of the page to get to even older posts.

If you’re looking for something a bit more specific, the best place to start is usually the search box, located near the top right. You can search the entire site contents from this box: just enter your search terms and press “Search” and results will be returned to you, sorted by relevance.

If you just want to browse, but would like to narrow it down somewhat, you can choose from the options under “Browse by Category”.

We also have a listing of upcoming events on the top right of the front page. The next four events are listed, and you can click on the “View All →” link to see all the upcoming events we have listed. Where possible, the titles will link to a page with more info on the specific event.

You may also notice the large subscribe button on the front page. If you’re not already subscribed to our fortnightly newsletter, we’d encourage you to do so. It only takes a minute, and it means that you can easily keep up to date with what’s going on.
