Homeless Services

In 2010-11, an estimated 230,500 people (equivalent to 1 in 97 Australians) used specialist homelessness services. Young people, families and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continued to be significant users of services. The most common reasons why people sought support were interpersonal relationship issues (such as domestic or family violence), according to the new Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report \’Government-funded specialist homeless services.\’

Porn Recall

The Australian Sex Party is calling on the Federal Govt to lift bans on pornography in Aboriginal communities, saying the restrictions are racist and ineffective. The ban was put in place after the Fed Govt was concerned with the link between the high prevalence of pornography and child sex abuse in the communities. The Australian Sex Party says the restrictions are a huge personal freedom issue. For story: http://www.sexparty.org.au/index.php/news/local-news/1130-let-aborigines-watch-porn-sex-party

Disadvantaged Children

A report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare ‘Child Protection Australia 2009-10 indicated that over 187,000 children were the subject of a child protection notification-a decrease of 10% from a year previous. Almost 36,000 were living in out-of-home care and there were almost 8050 foster carer households. Indigenous children on care and protection orders were nine times the rate of non-indigenous children. The number of children in substantiations of maltreatment was 7.1 per 1000 children. In the Nederlands it was 3.8/1000, in Canada 21.7/1000.

Another report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare into the educational outcomes of children on guardianship or custody orders from a study taken from 2003-06, (the first such study undertaken in Australia) shows that a higher proportion of those under these orders did not meet national benchmarks for reading and numeracy and indigenous children within this group are particularly disadvantaged.
