Muslim online newsletter muslimvillage.com reports that four men have been found guilty of giving a Sydney electrician 40 lashes with a cable, which they said was a punishment under Islamic law for drinking alcohol and using drugs. For story click here.

Parent Volunteers

The Department of Health in WA is seeking parent volunteers who have experience with a son or daughter that is using alcohol or drugs.

The volunteers will provie telephone or face to face support to parents either at the Perth Drug Court or at parent peer support groups. for info contact the Parent Drug Information Service on 9442 5050.

Youth House

The State Govt has given $50,000 to the Henri Nouwen House Youth Project in Bridgetown. Established in 1992, the house offers support and education to families affected by alcohol or drug dependency with the overall aim of empowering youth to make positive life choices. Skins Action

Movieguide has published an article about the TV show, called ‘Skins’ which is shown on SBS TV in Australia and has been called the most dangerous program that has ever been foisted on children. Movieguide says that this programme is a wake up call Christians have been waiting for. It says that this show is polluting the minds of young adults and adults.

Meanwhile MTV has announced that it will continue producing the show despite an exit of advertisers and a 50 per cent slump in ratings and a call for a government pornography probe.

Rev Fred Nile, leader of the Christian Democratic Party has introduced the ‘Alcoholic Beverages Advertising Prohibition Bill 2010′ into the NSW Parliament. It seeks to prohibit alcohol advertising in NSW.

Drinking Patterns

A report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare “Drinking patterns in Australia, 2001-2007” showed that alcohol consumption by young under legal aged people (14-17 years) has slightly declined from 66% in 2001 to 62% in 2007. One in five Australian females aged 14 years and over said they had abstained from drinking alcohol in the previous 12 months compared to one in seven among men.
