The program will be renamed the National School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program to reflect is broader scope, says School Education Minister Peter Garrett. He said he wanted to give schools greater choice. The Age Newspaper ran a poll where 88% of 1795 participants said they favoured the use of secular counsellors instead of chaplains. The Australian Prayer Network reports that the Australian Psychological Society has said the program is dangerous to children’s mental health. The constitution is said to prevent any laws being passed that provides ‘for establishing any religion, or for imposing any religious observance. Both major federal political parties have promised to fund 1000 more chaplains in schools over the next four years.
