Sydney World Family Congress- Bill Muehlenberg report

The World Family Congress was held in Sydney May 15-18 2013. It brought together the world’s top experts on Family research and Family lobby organisations. Around 100 international speakers were present. According to Bill Muehlenberg, from Culture Watch, if you were not at WCF7 ‘you missed out big time. Children of Light funding call

THe Children of Light organisation, is calling for more regular donors to fund its projects in Sumba, Indonesia. Children of Light provides placement for school aged children in Christian homes or boarding houses where they receive Biblical Instruction and health assistance. Tasmanian same-sex adoption Bill

The Australian Christian Lobby reports that the Tasmanian Govt’s Children’s Minister Michelle O’Byrne has tabled changes to the Adoption Act that would allow unmarried and homosexual couples to adopt children given up by their biological parents. The ACL has urged the Tasmanian Govt to reject the changes. O’Byrne is part of Emily’s List, which promotes and supports abortion.

Foster Child At All Time High

According to a report by Natasha Bita published on Perthnow.com.au (March 7) “Kids in foster care have hit an all-time high, after a 20 per cent surge in cases of abused and neglected children last year.”

She writes: “The federal government’s Australian Institute of Health and Welfare will reveal today that 12,240 children were put into foster care during 2011/12, resulting in a record 39,621 foster children.

More than 100 Australian children were classified as victims of abuse or neglect every day during 2011/12.”

WA Commissioner for Children and Young People Act Review

A Review is being undertaken by the Public Sector Commission into the Commissioner for Children and Young People.

A seven-member reference group, chaired by the Public Sector Commissioner Mal Wauchope, has also been established to guide the review. A report on the review will be provided to the Attorney General by 10 May 2013.

The review will consider:
• the operation and effectiveness of the Act 
• whether any amendments are required for the Commissioner to undertake the function described in Recommendation 2 of the St Andrew’s Hostel Inquiry.

Meanwhile the Commissioner for Children and Young People has released an updated edition of Improving legislation and policy for children and young peopleguidelines to assist those involved in developing legislation and policy to take into account how legislation or policy impacts on the needs of children and young people in Western Australia. Children and Policy, Legislation Seminar

The Commissioner for Children and Young People is holding a seminar on 25 Feb 2013, 1-3.30pm. It will be presented by barrister Victoria Williams and will give:

  • A review of how children and young people are affected both directly and indirectly by laws and policies
  • Examples of how to assess factors that affect the best interests of children and young people.

Euthanasia for children and dementia patients in Belgium

The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition warns in its Jan 2013 Newsletter that a group of legislators in Belgium announced their intention to widen access to euthanasia. They will seek to extend euthanasia to children and to people with dementia or Alzheimers. The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition is organising a meeting on Feb 18/19 in Europe to establish EPC in Europe.

Also in Belgium, on Dec 14, 2012 identical twins who were born deaf died by euthanasia at the Belgium University Hospital in Jette, even though they were not sick, they were not yet blind, and they had lived a productive life together. Tasmania Anti-Discrimination Bill

Saltshakers reports in its Dec 2012 Journal that “The Tasmanian government is planning more anti-discrimination laws. The Anti-Discrimination Amendment Bill 2012 will add new attributes of ‘gender identity’ and ‘intersex’. The prohibition of conduct that “offends, humiliates, intimidates, insults or ridicules” will be extended to all 20 attributes (instead of the current 7).

 ”Religious schools will have to apply for an exemption if they wish to decide who can enrol by reference to the parents’ faith -exemptions can only be applied for if there are more children than places available.”

Debate on the Bill started in mid-November.

Sexualisation of Children

An investigation into the sexualisation of young children is underway in WA after the State Parliament ordered the Children’s commissioner to tackle the emerging problem, reported the West Australian on 27 Oct 2012. (Watchdog to toughen protection for Kids, by Daniel Emerson). Laws governing billboards, the use of minors in advertising will be scrutinised. Ms Scott has to report in January to the Parliamentary Committee with recommendations. She will be focusing on the Criminal Code. 

 In March 2012 the Hon Nick Goiran, who has been advocating for an inquiry, moved a motion on the sexualisation of children in the legislative council. For the West Australian story click here.

Meanwhile the Australian Christian Lobby has launched a renewed national campaign to make outdoor advertising G rated.  ACL spokeswoman Wendy Francis said “we must protect our children from forming unhealthy attitudes toward women and sex.”

The ACL also reports on a speech by Tasmanian Labor Senator Helen Polley on the importance of addressing the sexualisation of children through highly sexualised advertising.
