Tassie Euthanasia Push

Tasmanian Premier Lara Giddings, in association with Greens leader, Nick McKim, launched a Euthanasia Discussion paper on 4 Feb 2013. Despite strong opposition in the Parliament, the premier says she will push ahead with plans to legalise euthanasia. 

On March 25 2013 the ABC reported that the Premier stands by euthanasia push.

Action: Makeastand.org.au asks people to write a letter to their MP on the issue. The website includes details on what to write and to whom. As of 26 March 2013, 1405 people had used this service to write letters to their MP.

Pro-Euthanasia WA Candidates Supported

The WA Voluntary Euthanasia Society ran a half page advert in the West Australian, March 6, page 21 listing pro-euthanasia candidates in the WA election. The advert ask people to vote for ‘End of Life Choice’.

It lists 16 pro-euthanasia candidates, including the 4 Greens, 8 Labor: Sue Ellery (also Emily’s List), Adele Farina, Sally Talbot (also Emily’s List),Ken Travers, Roger Cook, Mark McGowan, John Hyde, David Templeman.

Also included in the list was John McGrath, (Liberal), and Terry Redman (Nationals).

Meanwhile Paul Russell, from HOPE, an organisation working to fight against the Euthanasia culture in WA, has released comprehensive results of candidates views on euthanasia. Euthanasia Poll

People are being encouraged to take part in a poll on euthanasia run by the West Australian. To take part in poll click here. As at 8 Feb 58% (3095 people) said they did not support euthanasia. The poll is part of a campaign to introduce euthanasia in WA. Labor Party leader Mark McGowan said he would introduce euthanasia legislation if no one else did.

Declaration of HOPE in Canada

Euthanasia for children and dementia patients in Belgium

The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition warns in its Jan 2013 Newsletter that a group of legislators in Belgium announced their intention to widen access to euthanasia. They will seek to extend euthanasia to children and to people with dementia or Alzheimers. The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition is organising a meeting on Feb 18/19 in Europe to establish EPC in Europe.

Also in Belgium, on Dec 14, 2012 identical twins who were born deaf died by euthanasia at the Belgium University Hospital in Jette, even though they were not sick, they were not yet blind, and they had lived a productive life together. Declaration of HOPE

HOPE , the national no to euthanasia organisation led by Paul Russell is asking people to sign up to the Declaration of Hope. The declaration is a statement to all parliamentarians across Australia that you do not accept nor want euthanasia and assisted suicide enabling laws.  The declaration comes as the Sunday Times, The West Australian and Community Newspaper Group pick up their pro-euthanasia campaign and comes ahead of legislation before various parliaments across Australia.

Euthanasia support down

According to the ABC’s World Today, 16 Nov 2012, an online survey of more than 1,400 people conducted by the Australia Institute shows that 70% support euthanasia, compared to 75% last year. The biggest drop in support has been among young people. 

The ABC reported that Dr Christopher Middleton, chairman of the Tasmanian branch of the Australian Medical Association, believes legalising euthanasia would compromise the doctor’s role as a healer. For full story click here.

Euthanasia push in Vancouver

Exit International, the pro-euthanasia organisation run by Australian “Dr Death” Philip Nitschke is holding a workshop at the Vancouver Unitarian Church in late November. The workshop will discuss ways to kill yourself. According to Exit, the workshop “Adopts a harm minimisation framework” and is presented by Dr Nitschke.
