Same Sex Passports

Saltshakers reports in their November 2011 journal that Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) is considering altering the passport application form for children. The proposal is to include an option to select the terms ‘Parent 1’ and ‘Parent 2’ – this would be added alongside the current terms ‘Mother’ and ‘Father’. Saltshakers says: “this follows a similar decision by the British government, which takes effect next month. The USA government went even further in December 2010 – totally removing the words ‘Mother and ‘Father’. They now only have ‘Parent 1’ and ‘Parent 2’!”

Action: Saltshakers asks people to write to PM Julia Gillard, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, Foreign Affairs Minister Kevin Rudd and their federal MP and State Senators asking them to reject this DFAT proposal. Send letters to Parliament House, Canberra, ACT 2600.

Homosexual Campaign

A new website and facebook page has been launched which aims to share stories and experiences from homosexual couples. On Oct 12 homosexuals are planning to take their stories to Canberra. Gay and Lesbian Equality (WA) is looking particularly for activists residing in the electorates of Moore, Pearce, Curtin, Hasluck, Brand and Perth to join them in going to Canberra. GALE will assist in paying for the trip. Organisers say that research shows that the best way for someone to become a supporter of homosexual marriage is through a personal story – knowing someone who is affected, and what changing the law would mean to them.
