Tasmanian Debate Cancelled

The Australian Christian Lobby, Tasmanian Liberal MP Michael Ferguson and the Australian Family Association withdrew from a debate on homosexual marriage that was to be held at the University of Tasmania. Special Status

The UN Economic and Social Council voted on 27 July, 2011 to grant consultative status to the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA). It allows the ILGA to attend UN conferences and meetings, make oral interventions, host panels in UN buildings, make written statements and reports. ILGA first got consultative status in 1993 but lost it after one year and has been trying to regain the status ever since. 29 countries voted in favour, 14 against, 5 abstained. Action: Sign the petition on the www.makeastand.org.au website. As at July 1, 24,777 people have signed the petition. People can also use the site to write letters to their MPs. As at July 1, 6615 had used the site to write a MP letter.

Tasmania Surrogacy Bill

The Australian Christian Lobby reports that this week the Legislative Council agreed to refer the Tasmanian Surrogacy Bill 2011 to a parliamentary committee for closer examination. For story: http://australianchristianlobby.org.au/2011/06/tas-surrogacy-bill-sent-to-committee/

The Bill allows surrogacy for same-sex couples (male and female), single people as well as heterosexual de facto and married couples.

Homosexual Lobby

Marriage Equality Action Workshop held an all day workshop in Perth on June 25, 2011 at the Northbridge Piazza Function Centre. An Action Workshop is made up of two three-hour intensive sessions led by Marriage Equity said that Australia’s foremost “challenging-homophobia educator”, Daniel Witthaus was going to lead to workshop to help them hone their activist skills.

Marriage Changes

THE Labor Party’s Left faction at a recent meeting in Canberra has resolved to push for same-sex marriage at the ALP national conference scheduled for December. Police Homosexual Award

The Australian Federal Police issues a press release saying it was ranked the top public sector employer at the recent “Equality in Diversity Awards”. The Awards recognise the top 10 employers in Australia for their role in advocating homosexual employees. Also in the top 10 were IBM, KPMG, Accenture and Macquarie University. Curtin and UWA were both ranked 10th. Ranked highest overall was IBM.
