Drug Use Up

A new report, 2010 National Drug Strategy Household Survey Report released 27 July 2011 by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows that the use of illicit drugs has increased. Between 2007 and 2010 the number of people aged 14 or older who had used illicit drugs in the previous 12 months had risen from 13.4% to 14.7%. Youth Mental Wellbeing

The Commissioner for Children and Young People has announced an inquiry into children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing. In August-Sept it will be visiting regional WA to give more info about the nature of the inquiry.

Action: WA MLC Nick Goiran said in his Sept 2010 newsletter that he believes that the issue of sexualisation of children is an important aspect of mental health. Goiran says he will be making a submission and recommends people to write a submission also. Submissions need to be in by Nov 1, 2010.

Drug & Alcohol Symposium

More than 300 people gathered in Fremantle on Aug 31, 2010 for the 7th Western Australian Symposium; ‘Hope, Hype or Hard Evidence: Alcohol and Other Drugs Practice in the New Millennium’. Opening the event, Mental Health Minister Graham Jacobs said up to one-third of people with mental health problems experienced issues with alcohol and drugs. Get Up Busy

Action group, Get Up is working actively to promote its agenda in the election campaign supported by a significant advertising blitz. On the night of July 22, 2010 across Australia Get up members got together in 202 houses, including 26 homes in WA and 4 in Tasmania. Its campaign centres on climate change, mental health, refugees and forestry. In one day last week 6000 GetUp members contacted their local politician urging action on reducing carbon pollution.

Youth Blues

One in four young Australians aged 16-24 have a mental disorder according to a report released July 19, 2010 by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Almost 1/3 of young woman had a mental disorder compared to 1/4 of men. Those with mental disorders were more than 5 times more likely to use illicit drugs and twice as likely to smoke. Drugs Harm

The number of people being treated for dependence on opiod drugs such as heroin increased by over 2000 in 2009, according to a report released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare on May 26, 2010. There are now more than 43,000 Australians receiving treatment against these drugs. The majority (86%) are aged 20-49. 65% of the cases are men.
