China leadership change

The once in a decade change in power in China is taking place with the President and Premier to be replaced. It is expected that Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang will take over the presidency and premiership in March 2013. Open Doors China director Xiao Yun expects that churches all over China, but especially around 3000 churches in Beijing will have to lay low during the conference. It is expected that the leadership change will not make any difference for Christians. Opendoors asks that you pray:

-giving thanks for the amazing growth of the church in China.

-for the new political leaders that they will govern with wisdom.

-for wisdom for Open Doors staff as they determine how to support churches in minority areas such as Tibet and Xinjiang

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone – for kings and all those in authority…” 1 Timothy 2:1-2 (TNIV)

Pray Through Ramadan

Open Doors is encouraging Christians to spend their time during the Ramadan period (July 20-Aug 18) in prayer for Christians persecuted in Islamic cultures, praying that these Christians can make the most of their opportunities to reach out to their Muslim neighbours. This year the focus will be to pray through the beattitudes as found in Matt 5:3-10.

Kenya violence

OpenDoors reports that at least 18 people died, while 66 were wounded, in the north eastern town of Garissa in Kenya on Sunday 1 July. Assailants wearing balaclavas simultaneously burst into the Africa Inland Church (AIC) and Lady of Consolata Catholic Church, shooting at worshippers and detonating grenades. Two policemen guarding the AIC were among those killed – four of the injured remain in critical condition in Nairobi hospitals. For story click here.

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?” Romans 8:35

Action: Open Doors asks that you pray for the Lords comfort for the bereaved and injured and for the OpenDoors workers in the country as they investigate the attacks and determine a response.

Stand Up Sunday

On the 3rd of June 2012, Open Doors invites you to stand up and say enough is enough. On this day, they are encouraging Churches across Australia to join  in Stand Up Sunday, supporting Christian brothers and sisters in Iraq. On that day Christians are urged to:

1. PRAY specifically for what is happening in Iraq, trusting that God would strengthen the believers there.
2.GIVE to support placement of Christians who have had to flee their homes and livelihoods because of threats to their lives and families.
3.WRITE to the Australian Government who gives millions of dollars in aid to Iraq to encourage them to act. We want them to ensure there are better safeguards in place for Christians who want to stay and be a witness in Iraq.

Open Doors says: “1 Corinthians tells us: “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it.” We as Christians have a moral responsibility to speak out against injustice.”
