The Commissioner for Children and Young People is holding a seminar on 25 Feb 2013, 1-3.30pm. It will be presented by barrister Victoria Williams and will give:

  • A review of how children and young people are affected both directly and indirectly by laws and policies
  • Examples of how to assess factors that affect the best interests of children and young people.

Nominations are sought for Liberal Party Endorsement for the Legislative Assembly Electorates of Armadale, Butler, Cockburn, Fremantle, Kimberley, Victoria Park and Willagee. The closure date is 25 July 2012. In addition, nominations are sought for the seats of the Central Wheatbelt, Collie Preston, Pilbara, Warren Blackwood and Wagin by 22 Aug 2012.

40 Days for Life

Coinciding with the 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting 22 Feb to 1 April (Lent), the 40 days for life will be held across the world, including Perth and Hobart. A vigil will be held at the Marie Stopes abortion clinic in Midland. Last year around 300 people from around Perth converged on an abortion clinic in Rivervale during the period. Govt funded Islam evangelism

Babette Francis reports in the Feb 2012 Endeavour Forum newsletter that the Australian Govt is promoting Islam in Australia. The Gillard Govt has spent more than $9.7m for the purpose of ‘developing and implementing activities that assist the Islamic Society of Victoria to dispel myths and misconceptions about Islam and Muslims. Babette reports that the government is funding overseas religion workers paying them a salary of $66,000 per year to preach Islam in Australia.

40 Days for Life

Religious Education

The Age reports on an article on Christian Religious Education and a complaint that has been lodged with the Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission by those opposed to religious education.

At the time that Saltshakers asked for Action (May 16) it reported that of the 33,000 votes, 53% voted yes. By June 3, 80438 voted, of which 78% had voted Yes.

Victorian Equal Opportunity

Christian Schools Australia notes that the new Victorian Govt has moved to amend the State’s Equal Opportunity Act, reinstating a religious exemption clause that was removed by the previous Govt after strong lobby from the organisation as well as the ACL and others.
